Tonya began her television career as a desk assistant at WLS-TV/Channel 7 in Chicago. She later moved to WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she worked as a reporter and associate producer. One year later she went to work at WJRT-TV in Flint, Michigan. s she was working there, Tonya worked her way up from general assignment reporter to weekend anchor.

Tonya worked at CLTV in December of 2002 and was soon after named morning anchor, prior to that she was a general assignment reporter and fill-in anchor for WGN-TV. She then joined WGN News team in 2012.Tonya is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the National Association of Black Journalists.
