Shepard Smith Gay| Shepard Smith Comes Out

In 2017 during an April 21 speech at Ole Miss’ Meek School of Journalism Smith said that for his college years and the first two decades of his career, he didn’t hide his sexuality so much as he just steered clear of the issue entirely. He poured himself into his work because he was unprepared to deal with the consequences. He listed some of the reasons that made him avoid the subject;

“A. You’re going to hell for it, B. You’ll never have any friends again. C. What are you going to tell your family? And by the way, you’re on television on the craziest conservative network on Earth. That will probably put you in front of a brick wall. Of course, none of that was true, but that’s how it felt… Once I figured it all out, I wasn’t hiding anything, I was always as true to me as I knew how to be. If I was fibbing to you, it’s because I was fibbing to me. And I didn’t realize I was fibbing to you because I didn’t know I was fibbing to me. And I know that sounds like such a load of (expletive), but it really is my truth. And I don’t have to fib about anything ever again as long as I live and that really makes everything so much easier.”

He also said that his sexuality was both important and a non- issue.

“I don’t think about it, It’s not a thing. I go to work. I manage a lot of people. I cover the news. I deal with holy hell around me. I go home to the man I’m in love with.”

Shepard Smith Leaving Fox

On October 11 2019 Fox News anchor Shepard Smith, a frequent target of President Trump’s attacks, stepped down after clashing with some of the network’s primetime stars.

“Recently I asked the company to allow me to leave FOX News and begin a new chapter. After requesting that I stay, they graciously obliged. The opportunities afforded this guy from small town Mississippi have been many,” Smith said in a statement.

“It’s been an honor and a privilege to report the news each day to our loyal audience in context and with perspective, without fear or favor. I’ve worked with the most talented, dedicated and focused professionals I know and I’m proud to have anchored their work each day—I will deeply miss them.”

During his Friday afternoon show, Smith announced his decision “to leave Fox News and begin a new chapter,” after increasingly clashing with the network’s prime-time opinion hosts.

Such a departure, occurring suddenly on a Friday afternoon in the middle of an anchor’s contract cycle, suggest a severe fissure between Smith and Fox management, though both sides spoke favorably of one another when announcing the exit. Among his final comments was that he and his colleages had “endeavored to deliver [news reports] to you, while speaking truth to power without fear or favor, in context and with perspective.

Initially, there were report of Smith  being fired by chairman Rupert Murdoch for being controversial but it was discovered that they were fake news. Some Fox News fans had grown frustrated by Shepard, whose reporting has at times been critical of President Trump and conservatives. However, the cable channel denied the persistent rumors of Smith being fired.

Rachel Maddow on stage at the Fox Theatre Sunday October 14, 2019 to promote her latest book heaped praise on Shepard as a bulwark of the Fox News division and was saddened to see him leave.

Shepard Smith of Fox News explains the changes in the media industry … is getting pre-empted by the most popular political drama in America.

Smith is disengaged by politics. “I get it,” he says, “that some of our opinion programming is there strictly to be entertaining. I get that. I don’t work there. I wouldn’t work there. I don’t want to sit around and yell at each other and talk about your philosophy and my philosophy. That sounds horrible to me.” He cites his values growing up: “You don’t talk about your money, you don’t talk about your politics, and you don’t talk about your sex. Right now, everyone wants to talk about those things, and I’m not one of them. Not going to do it.
