Max Charles Talks The Neighbors And The Amazing Spider-Man – Interview
Source: bsckids.com
BSCkids: Max Charles
When and how did you know you wanted to be an actor?
My brother Logan was doing a bunch of auditions and I would watch him work on the sides (scripts) and I wanted to try it so bad! I begged my mom until she said ok and then my Aunt Wendi set up an appointment for us to meet with an agent. CESD signed me that day.
How have your parents supported your choice to be in the entertainment industry?
Well, they have supported all of us by moving our whole family out here from Nashville so I and my brothers could all do acting and music. It’s working out pretty good!
What has been your favorite project so far and why?
Well, I love all the projects I get to do because they are all so different and I have been lucky to get to play different types of characters. I’ve been lots of characters so far – a superhero, a kidnapped kid, a kid in a post-apocalypse escape, a bratty rich kid, a kid from the 1900s, a kid who can read minds and tons more. My favorite movie project is The Amazing Spiderman! That’s a dream come true to be Peter Parker!
Tell us about your character in the ABC series, “The Neighbors.”
My character in The Neighbors is Max Weaver. It’s pretty cool that we have the same first name. I think I was meant to have this role. Max Weaver is a cool kid and he’s really nice but very normal like most kids. His sister bugs him but he cares about her and is protective. He doesn’t like school so much but he does like sports.
Do you share any similarities with your character in real life?
Yeah, I’m kind of like Max in some ways but I like school (especially math) and he screams more than I do haha I like to do sports and skateboard a ton and I love to sing and rap so I hope I get to do more of that on the show.
You also worked on the blockbuster film The Amazing Spider-man, what was that like?
Working on The Amazing Spider-Man was amazing haha! It was a dream come true to be Peter Parker! I got to spend some time with Andrew Garfield and that was awesome! He always took time to hang with me and talk. It was also great talking to Martin Sheen because we are both from the same hometown. I was born in Dayton Ohio and he is from there. We both have some favorite places there that are the same! When I was like 3 my mom dressed me up as Spiderman for Halloween and I wore the costume every day! We have a cool picture of me and all of my brothers wearing Spiderman costume.
You worked with an all-star cast on the film, what was the most important lesson you learned from your fellow cast members?
They are regular people and they took the time to talk with me. That was my first feature film and they made it so fun for me. They didn’t treat me like I was new in the business but they just hung out and talked about things we like. It was funny because everyone said how much Andrew and I act the same when we are talking. Our movements I guess are the same and we look a lot alike. When I got to New York to film I was walking in my hotel and Andrew was riding his bike and saw me. It was so cool that he saw me and rode across the street to talk with me. He’s just so nice.
I have a funny story about when I met Emma Stone. When we first met she dropped her pen and we both bent down to pick it up and bonked heads. We couldn’t stop laughing and then whenever I saw her she said I would always think of her as the girl I bonked heads with. She’s so nice too!
You also did voice-over work on the upcoming animated film, Mr. Peabody & Sherman. What was the most difficult part of that experience?
Working on Peabody and Sherman is the best! I’m still working on that project and love going in the studio. It’s so fun to be Sherman because I can really get into the character and I don’t have to worry about camera angles or marks or anything. I can be weird and fun. This is going to be the best animated and I can’t wait until it comes out this November. Ty Burrell is awesome as Mr. Peabody! It’s very cool to have an animated character look so much like Me!
Do you prefer working on television shows or movies more?
I love both so much because they are so different. I’m so lucky that I love my character Max Weaver and all the people on The Neighbors because I spend so much time working on that show. I hope we get to do lots of seasons of The Neighbors. Movies are awesome to work on because I know I get to be a totally different character in each movie.
What is your favorite television show currently airing and why?
Besides The Neighbors haha I watch Doctor Who with my brothers and really like that show so much. The writers and actors are genii!
If you could meet one celebrity that you haven’t yet, who would it be?
Definitely, Matt Smith from Dr. Who! He’s just amazing and he plays the Doctor so great! I wonder what he is like in real life?
Do your friends treat you any differently since becoming a known young actor?
No, they treat me the same as before. I only talk about acting when they have questions but most of the time we just hang out or play sports and stuff.
