LP RECORD (1950-1980)

LP records, also known as long playing records or vinyl records, were the dominant format for recorded music from the 1950s to the 1980s. They were made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a type of plastic, and were typically 12 inches in diameter. LP records could hold up to 22 minutes of music per side, which was a significant increase over the previous format, the 78 rpm record, which could only hold up to 5 minutes of music per side.

LP records were popular for a number of reasons. First, they could hold more music than previous formats, which allowed for longer albums and more complex compositions. Second, LP records produced a higher quality of sound than previous formats. Third, LP records were relatively durable and could be played many times without being damaged.

LP records began to decline in popularity in the 1980s with the rise of cassette tapes and compact discs (CDs). Cassette tapes were more convenient than LP records because they were smaller and easier to carry around. CDs were also more convenient than LP records because they were digital, which meant that they could be skipped to specific songs and that they could be copied easily.

Despite their decline in popularity, LP records have remained a popular choice for audiophiles and collectors. LP records are also popular for use in DJing and other live music applications.
