Bill Gates born as William Henry Gates III, is an American business magnate, investor, author, philanthropist, humanitarian and principal founder of the Microsoft Corporation. While working at Microsoft, Bill Gates was the chairman, CEO and chief software architect, as well as the largest individual shareholder until May 2014.
Together with Paul Allen, Gates launched Microsoft in 1975 and it has grown to become the world’s largest PC software company. At this time, Gates led the company as the CEO until he stepped down in January 2000, but remained as chairman and came up with the position of chief software architect for himself.
In June 2006, he announced that he would be shifting from full-time work at Microsoft to part-time work and full-time work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which was established in 2000. He gradually transferred his duties to Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie. He then stepped down as chairman of Microsoft in February 2014 and took a new post as technology adviser to support the newly appointed CEO Satya Nadella.

On July 27, 2017 and since October 27, 2017, he has been surpassed by Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO, who had an estimated net worth of US$90.6 billion at that time. As of August 6, 2018, Gates had a net worth of $95.4 billion, this made him the second-richest person in the world, behind Bezos.
Since leaving Microsoft, he has pursued a number of philanthropic works. He contributed large amounts of money to various charitable organizations and scientific research programs through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Gates teamed up with Warren Buffett and founded The Giving Pledge in 2009. This is a commitment by the wealthiest to give at least half (a majority) of their wealth to philanthropy. Gates joined Lakeside School at the age of 13. This is a private preparatory school. While in his eighth grade, the Mothers’ Club bought a Teletype Model 33 ASR terminal and a block of computer time on a General Electric computer using proceeds from the school’s rummage sale. He took an interest in programming the GE system in BASIC, and was exempted from math classes to pursue his interest.
He wrote his first computer program on this machine: an implementation of tic-tac-toe that allowed users to play games against the computer. His interest on the machine was how it would always execute software code perfectly.When he reviewed back on that moment, he said, “There was just something neat about the machine.”
After the Mothers Club donation was finished, he and other students found time on systems including DEC PDP minicomputers. One of these systems was a PDP-10 belonging to Computer Center Corporation (CCC), which banned four Lakeside students – Gates, Paul Allen, Ric Weiland, and Kent Evans – for the summer after it found them exploiting bugs in the operating system to obtain free computer time.
At the end of the ban, the four offered to find bugs in CCC’s software in exchange for extra computer time. Instead of using the system via Teletype, Gates went to CCC’s offices and studied source code for various programs that ran on the system, including programs in Fortran, Lisp, and machine language later. His arrangement with CCC continued until 1970, when the company went out of business. Information Sciences, Inc. hired the four Lakeside students the following year, to write a payroll program in COBOL. They were also provided with computer time and royalties.
Gate’s administrators became aware of his programming abilities, then he wrote the school’s computer program to schedule students in classes. He modified the code so that he was placed in classes with “a disproportionate number of interesting girls.” He later said that “it was hard to tear myself away from a machine at which I could so unambiguously demonstrate success.” Gates created a venture with Allen, called Traf-O-Data, at the age of 17. The Traf-O-Data was created to make traffic counters based on the Intel 8008 processor.
He served as a congressional page in the U.S. House of Representatives, in 1972. He graduated from Lakeside School in 1973 and was a National Merit Scholar. He joined Harvard College in the autumn of 1973 after scoring 1590 out of 1600 on the Scholastic Aptitude Tests (SAT)
He took mathematics and graduate level computer science courses although he had chosen a pre-law. At Harvard, he met Steve Ballmer as a fellow student. Later, Steve Ballmer became the CEO of Microsoft from January 2000 to February 2014 after succeeding Gates. After two years, Gates left Harvard
Gates devised an algorithm for pancake sorting as a solution to one of a series of unsolved problems presented in a combinatorics class by Harry Lewis, one of his professors, during his second year. His solution held the record of the fastest version for over thirty years. It’s successor is faster by only one percent. In collaboration with Harvard computer scientist Christos Papadimitriou, Gate’s solution was later formalized in a published paper.
He spent lots of his time using the school’s computers as he did not have a specific study plan while he was at Harvard. Gates had in contact with Paul Allen, and he joined him at Honeywell during the summer of 1974. The next year, the MITS Altair 8800 was released. The new computer was based on the Intel 8080 CPU, and both Gates and Allen saw the opportunity to start their own computer software company.
He went ahead and discussed his decision to leave Harvard with his parents. They supported him after seeing how much their son wanted to start his own company. To explain his decision, he said “…if things hadn’t worked out, I could always go back to school. I was officially on leave of absence”.

Bill Gates and Paul Allen created a partnership called Micro-soft in the year 1975. It has grown into one of the largest U.S. corporations and has placed them among the world’s richest people.
Gates and Allen were friends and fellow Basic programmers at Lakeside School in Seattle. Allen graduated before Gates and joined Washington State University. The two built a computer based on an Intel 8008 chip and used it to analyze traffic data for the Washington state highway department, doing business as Traf-O-Data.
Allen later worked for Honeywell in Boston, while Gates enrolled at Harvard University in nearby Cambridge. The report in late 1974 of the first personal computer kit, the Altair 8800, excited them, but they knew they could improve its performance with BASIC.
Allen talked to Ed Roberts, president of Altair manufacturer MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems), and sold him on the idea. Gates and Allen worked tirelessly, to finish the first microcomputer BASIC. Allen moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, in January 1975 to be the director of software for MITS before Gates left Harvard and joined Allen in Albuquerque.
Allen was slightly older than Gates with him being 22 when Gates was 19. By March, Altair BASIC was complete and functioning. The “Micro-soft” partnership was sealed in April, but it had no name for a few more months.
